Oral History Project

The Oral History Project grew out of our work with the NI Commission for Victims and Survivors (CVS). Working with Professor Chris Reynolds from Nottingham Trent University, young people from the CVS Youth Panel explored how oral history can be used to capture, preserve and share stories and experiences from the past, particularly those connected to Legacy and the NI Conflict.

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
As part of the project, the young people applied their learning by developing their own oral history projects, which they presented at the Ulster Museum. This provided an opportunity to develop practical skills, strengthen their understanding of oral history and consider how personal stories and experiences can be recorded and shared sensitively and effectively.

Building on this experience, the young people created an Oral History Toolkit for young people. The Toolkit brings together their learning and provides a practical, accessible resource to support other young people in planning and carrying out their own oral history projects.

The Toolkit was developed in partnership with NI Youth Forum, the Commission for Victims and Survivors, National Museums NI and Nottingham Trent University.

The Toolkit, Our Stories: Spoken. Recorded. Remembered., was officially launched at the Ulster Museum on 1st October 2026, celebrating the work and achievements of the young people involved and sharing their learning with a wider audience. The event also included contributions from each of the project partners, including the Commissioner for Victims and Survivors, Joe McVey.
